Where They Live:
Koalas Are At Home In Gum Trees In The Forests Of Eastern Australia. They Live In The Bush With Other Koalas, Each Has Its Own Home Tree That No Other Koalas Visit Unless It Is Mating Season. The Koalas Sleep On Average 18 Hours Per Day In The Fork Of The Gum Tree.
What They Eat:
They Thrive On Eucalyptus Leaves. Although They Obtain Most Of Their Drinking Water From The Leaves, The Name Koala Means "No Drink," In Several Native Aboriginal Tongues. On Occasion They Do Drink Water On The Banks Of Streams. Baby Koalas Are Called Joeys And When They Are Born They Are Pink And The Size Of A Jelly Bean. The Closest Relative Of The Koala Is A Wombat. They Both Have Pouches Which Open Towards The Rear. This Works Well For The Wombat, But Koalas Require Strong Muscles Surrounding Their Pouch To Keep Their Young From Falling Out. They Communicate With Each Other By Making A Noise Which Resembles A Snore, And Then A Belch, Known As A Bellow.
